History and Origins of the VizslaThe History and Origins of the Vizsla is really interesting. The history of the Vizsla began when a tribe known as the Magyar hordes settled in Hungary. This tribe used the dog as both a hunter and a companion. It is believed that the Vizsla descended from Pointer type breeders, however, it also shows similarities to the retriever. Transylvanian hounds and Turkish Yellow Dogs are believed to have played some part in the creation of the Vizsla. The exact date of origin is unclear, however, there are etching which have been depicted dating back as long ago as the 10th century. This high class hunting dog was used to hunt waterfowl, rabbits and upland game. After the World Wars, this breed came close to extinction but increased in popularity when it was introduced to the United States of America during the 1950s. The Hungarian word Vizsla means pointer and it is from this meaning that the Vizsla name derived. The AKC recognized this breed in 1960. Other names include Rovidszoru Magyar Vizsla & Hungarian Pointer. |
