History and Origins of the Shikoku

The History and Origins of the Shikoku is really interesting. The history of the Shikoku began on the Japanese island of Shikoku. This is a confident, alert and curious that is medium in size, energetic and smart. The main original breeding purpose of the Shikoku was to hunt deer & boar in mountainous regions of Kochi Prefecture, located on Shikoku Island. This breed belongs to the Spitz group of dogs and is closely related to the other Japanese Spitz dog breeds, the Akita Inu and the Shiba Inu. This breed was recognized by the Japanese Crown in 1937 as a natural treasure of Japan. The availability of the Shikoku-inu is limited; and even in the breed's native country of Japan, this breed is quite rare.

The Shikoku belongs to the Shik-inus because it is a medium sized breed so the Japanese class the breed as belonging to the Shik-inus. Other names for this breed include Shikoku-inu (the addition of inu meaning dog), Kochi-ken (as this breed was often used to hunt boar and deer in the mountain ranges of Kochi Prefecture), Deerhound, and Japanese Wolfdog (due to its countries origin and the dog's wolf-like similarities). The Japanese words ken and inu mean dog. This breed of puppy and dog is recognized by the Japanese Kennel Club but is not currently recognized by the American Kennel Club. Typically this breed is a very good judge of character, it is also intelligent which means that these dogs are trainable, particularly due to the fact that the breed isn't quite as independent as some other Japanese breeds, nor as stubborn.
