History and Origins of the PuliThe History and Origins of the Puli is really interesting. The history of the Puli began in Hungary where it was bred from their ancestors who arrived in Hungary with the Magyars. The Puli was developed to assist shepherds by herding flocks, which is a role that the breed efficiently carried out for more than 1000 years! The Puli is known as the ancient sheepdog of Hungary. This breed share similaries with the Kuvasz and the Komondor which also have the unique, distinctive corded coat of the Puli. The coat really is a spectacular development as it is so heavy, long and thick that protected the dog from animal attacks whilst watching and herding sheep, the coat also protected the animal during poor weather conditions. Interbreeding was introduced during the 17th century and the original Puli almost became extinct but it was saved in 1912 and lead to the first Puli standard in 1915. The American Kennel Club recognized it in 1936. The breed is also known by the names of Pulik, Hungarian Puli and Hungarian Water Dog. |
