It's believed that the breed descended from a European country as it's been depicted in Italian, Spanish and French artwork. The Papillon is believed to have developed many years ago and it one of the oldest breeds. This small, even-tempered and kind hearted dog is believed to have been bred as a companion. It was depicted on the laps of French and Spanish noblewomen. The name Papillon means butterfly in French and this derives from the breed's butterfly-like ears.
