History and Origins of the Chinese CrestedThe History and Origins of the Chinese Crested is really interesting. The history of the Chinese Crested Hairless and Powder Puff dogs is not totally clear. It is believed to have started onboard ships with Chinese mariners when they stopped along the shores of Africa and took the African hairless dog, which is believed to have played a part in the development of the Chinese Crested dog. In the early days, during the time of the Chinese plagues, this breed was used aboard ships to hunt vermin. The Aztecs are said to have used the dogs as bed warmers and also to have eaten them. The breed began to appear in European art around the 1850s, and towards the end of the 19th century, they were shown in American dog shows. During recent times, the Chinese Crested dog has been shown in rare breed dog shows. The American Kennel Club formally recognized this breed of puppy and dog in the year of 1991. |
