History and Origins of the Alsatian

The History and Origins of the Alsatian, otherwise known as the German Shepherd Dog, is really interesting. The history and origin of the Alsatian began in Karlsruhe, Germany in 1899. This breed of dog was developed from farm and herding dogs by a group of people, one of which was a German Cavalry Officer named Captain Max Von Stephanitz. They wanted to breed a dog that was unique in its ways, had distinctive physical and mental endurance skills and abilities, and could work in all weather conditions. The American Kennel Club, AKC, officially recognised the Alsatian breed in 1908. They were used during World War I as this breed had the ability to help and assist with many important tasks, such as transporting supplies and messages, guarding, helping with search and rescue by assisting the Red Cross. American and British servicemen were impressed by this dog and started bringing them back to their countries.

These dogs became increasingly popular over the years, particularly during World War II as Alsatians worked for both Allied and Axis forces, carrying out vital tasks and duties. In today's times, the faultless skill, strength and endurance has led the Alsatian breed to become the most popular police dog, military dog and guard dog throughout the world. Not only is the Alsatian used solely for work purposes as its intelligence and desire to please, allows this breed of dog to be easily trainable, therefore, suitable as a family pet if handled correctly.
