History and Origins of the Yorkshire Terrier

The History and Origins of the Yorkshire Terrier is really interesting. The history of the Yorkshire Terrier began in the city of Yorkshire, Northern England. It is thought that the breed was created through crossing terriers with local long-haired breeds, then gradually downsized through selective breeding. The name of the breed derives from its city of origin and it is also sometimes shortened to the nickname Yorkie. This breed was quite a status symbol throughout European homes, however, this wasn't always the case! Back in the nineteenth century, the Yorkshire Terrier was initially used to as a rat catcher in clothing mills in England. When this breed was first developed, it was owned mainly by the working class, particularly weavers who joked that the luxurious coat of the Yorkie was produced by the looms. The breed later introduced to European countries and became a fashion dog and a companion breed of high society classes. The American Kennel Club formally recognized the Yorkshire Terrier in 1885.
