History and Origins of the WeimaranerThe History and Origins of the Weimaraner is really interesting. The history of the Weimaraner began in Germany many centuries ago when German breeders decided to create a willing and dependable hunting dog. Originally, this breed was named the Weimer Pointer which came from the court that sponsored the breed and it was used to hunt large game including bears, wolves and deer. Therefore, the typical temperament of this strong and athletic breed is very courageous and fearless. The demand for hunting such ferocious animals lessened over the years and the dog was used as a small game hunting companion, a bird dog and a family companion. The Germans created the Weimaraner from other German hunting breeds, it is believed to have directly descended from the Bloodhound. The American Kennel Club officially recognized the breed in 1943 and it is listed under the sporting group of dogs. This breed is also known by other names which include the grey ghost and Weimaraner Vorstehhund. | |
