History and Origins of the Staffordshire Bull TerrierThe History and Origins of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is really interesting. The history of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier began during the nineteenth century in the English town of Staffordshire. The reason that this dog was developed was because local coal miners required a small, fit and speedy dog. This breed was created through crossing the Bulldog with terriers such as the Manchester Terrier. Originally this breed was used for bull baiting in England until interest in this sport decreased and the breed became less popular, however, it increased again during the twentieth century, also gaining popularity in the US. The American Kennel Club recognized this breed in 1975. This dog has a sturdy build, it works and plays hard, and has a fearless and determined temperament. It is also known by the nickname Staffy and is often named the English Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The name of the breed derives from the dog belonging to the terrier group and being bred through crossing the Bulldog in Staffordshire. |
