History and Origins of the Silky Terrier

The History and Origins of the Silky Terrier is really interesting. The history of the Silky Terrier began in the late 1800s in Australia when breeders wanted to develop the Australian Terrier in order to improve the color of its coat. The breeders did this by crossing their Australian Terrier with Yorkshire Terriers that had been taken across from England. The result was interesting as this mixture produced litters containing the three different breed. The breeders made further developments by breeding together just the blue and tan coated Silky Terrier types. Over the years, this breed has been used as a vermin hunter and a companion. Both of which it is excellent at as this Terrier is very confident, keen, enthusiastic and energetic, but at the same time has a loving and affectionate personality and temperament. The American Kennel Club formally recognized this Terrier in 1959. This breed is sometimes known by other names which include : Australian Silky Terrier, Silky Toy Terrier and Sydney Terrier.
