History and Origins of the Siberian Husky

The History and Origins of the Siberian Husky is really interesting. This breed originated in Northeast Asia, in Siberia. The history of the Siberian Husky is though to have began off the eastern  Siberian peninsula, where the breed is believed to have originated within the Chukchi Tribe. These agreeable and enthusiastic working dogs were used for sledding, watch dogs and herding reindeer in cold Siberian weather conditions. The main breeding purpose of the Siberian Husky was to work as a sled dog; this breed travels quickly and can carry light loads over very long distances; having the stamina to enable the dog to work for long periods of time. The Siberian Husky has great strength, power, stamina, endurance and enthusiasm. The speed and endurance of this dog was recognized and it was used in the All-Alaskan Sweepstakes where it took part in an 408 mile arctic race in 1908.

History and Origins - How the Siberian Husky got its name

This hard working breed was also used for important duties during the Second World War when it was called upon to assist the Army with its Arctic search and rescue. The Siberian Hustky was bred with a thick double coat to keep it protected whilst working in cold climates. The breed was also used to take medicine to the people of Nome, Alaska in 1925, when an epidemic of diphtheria broke out. 'The Great Race of Mercy' gave credit to the dog for carrying out such valuable and important work and this saw the popularity of the Siberian Husky increase. The personality and temperament of this breed is dignified, gentle and affectionate which makes it a very popular companion and also a popular show dog. The AKC, American Kennel Club officially recognized the Siberian Husky in 1930. This breed is also known by the names of Husky and Sibe.
