Shetland Sheepdog Dog Grooming Instruction - Brushing Hair and Coat Most dog's hair and coats need some attention. The Shetland Sheepdog dog grooming instruction for caring for your dog's hair or coat is as follows: - The Shetland Sheepdog has a dense, rough long coat that will require regular grooming in order to keep it looking healthy and tangle-free. Shelties are average shedders except for twice a year, when they shed their coats heavily. During shedding periods, the coat should be brushed or combed on a daily basis to help reduce the amount of dead or loose hairs.
- Try spraying your Sheltie puppy or dog's coat lightly with water before grooming begins
- Removing knots or tangles can be difficult so try teasing out knots with a comb first
- Use a firm bristle brush with wide spaced bristles and follow the direction of hair growth
- A slicker brush can be used to help remove tangles and mats. Be very gentle with this.

However, should your dog's nails become long then they should be trimmed. It is important to know exactly what you are doing, as cutting too deep into your Shetland Sheepdog dog's nails can cause damage and pain. Written instruction is not enough as the risk of hurting your Shetland Sheepdog is too high. - Your vet can help initially by demonstrating how to trim your dog's nails and supervise your first attempt
- Spend some time touching your dog's paws and gently squeezing the area around the nails in order to familiarize them with this sensation
- Seek advice from your vet about the most appropriate nail clippers for your pet
