History and Origins of the Shetland Sheepdog

The History and Origins of the Shetland Sheepdog is really interesting. The history of the Shetland Sheepdog breed derives from the Border Collie from whom this breed was developed. The Border Collie originated from Scotland and was taken to the Shetland Islands where it was further bred when breeders downsized and crossed it other intelligent, long haired breeds until eventually the Shetland Sheepdog was created. This particular breed is  highly trainable, intelligent and extremely loyal which made it an excellent sheep herder and farm dog.  In fact, they are such naturally skilled herders that they will sometimes bark and attempt to herd people! However, obedience training should help to resolve this. This breed is very smart and excels at obedience competitions, agility and herding. In 1911, this breed was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC).

It was from this line of work and origin that the name of the dog breed was chosen. The most common nickname for the Shetland Sheepdog is the Sheltie.
