History and Origins of the Schipperke

The History and Origins of the Schipperke is really interesting. The history of the Schipperke began in the Flemish regions of Belgium where a breeder called Renssens developed this small sized breed of dog that is full of energy and character. The Schipperke was developed from the Leauvenaar, which is a black sheepdog, and it had to be brought down in size to achieve the Schipperke breed. Belgium breeders created this dog to work alongside tradesmen where it would have several working purposes. This breed was used as a ratter on the canal barges as well as a companion and a watchdog - barking loudly when approached by unfamiliar faces. This active, bright breed has a confident, enthusiastic and curious personality and temperament which made it excellent for its working roles, and its harsh double coat allowed it to work through variable weather conditions. 

History and Origins - How the Schipperke got its name

The history and origins of the Schipperke continues with how the dog got his name! As this dog was often used to work on river barges the name Schipperke derived. It was actually formed through the use of the word 'schip' which means boat. The other names sometimes given to this breed include Spitzke, Spitske, Little Skipper or Little Captain which was a nickname that the tradesmen often gave to the dog as it guarded and worked so well upon its river barge, and often belonged to the captain himself. The Schipperke participated in its first dog show in 1880. Later the same decade, the breed started to become a popular family, household pet and starting being introduced to other countries. In today's times, fishermen and so forth will still use this dog as companion on their boats. The American Kennel Club officially recognized this breed of puppy and dog in the year of 1904.
