The history of the Rottweiler is thought to have began back in Roman times when the Romans brought drover's dogs, to accompany their herds, to parts of Europe during times of invasion. One of the dogs that this breed possibly descends from is the Italian Mastiff which is also a strong, powerful breed. The Germans were impressed by the guarding and herding skills of these dogs, and this is why breeders decided to improve upon these strengths of character and develop the Rottweiler. Throughout history, this breed has been recognized for its working abilities and used in various roles including herder, service dog, therapy dog, police dog, military dog, guard dog, cattle driver and also as a faithful and dedicated companion. This is an intelligent and trainable breed that enjoys being set a task - this is a very dedicated and conscientious worker.

The history and origins of the Rottweiler continues with how the dog got his name! The name of this breed actually derives from the town in which it was bred! The town of Rottweiler which is located in Wurttemberg, Germany. As the demand for this breed decreased during the 1800s, it almost became extinct! However, recovery of the breed was made in the early 1900s when breeders of Stuttgart, Germany began enthusiastically breeding the Rottie again. The DRK which stands for Deutscher Rottweiler-Klub was established in 1907, which brought with it increased demand and popularity for the breed. The SDRK which means South German Rottweiler-Klub was established later the same year. This club has now been renamed IRK - International Rottweiler-Klub. This breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1931.
