History and Origins of the Rhodesian Ridgeback

The History and Origins of the Rhodesian Ridgeback is really interesting. The history of the Rhodesian Ridgeback began in South Africa when Boer farmers decided that they required a breed of dog that would skilfully and willingly hunt in the wilds. A man called Reverend Helm took two Rhodesian Ridgebacks to Rhodesia where they were introduced to hunting lions on horseback. This breed is an exceptional and ferocious hunter, it's a large sized dog that is powerful, strong, courageous and active. The breed got its name partly because it originated from Rhodesia and also because it has a ridge running down its back, hence the name Rhodesian Ridgeback. Specimens of the breed were introduced to America in 1950 and the American Kennel Club formally recognized it in 1955. This breed of puppy and dog is also named the African Lion Hound, Lion Dog and Ridgeback.
