The History and Origins of the Pomeranian is really interesting. The history of the Pomeranian began in the area of Pomerania which is now present day Poland and Germany. The breed's name derives from the region of Pomerania. This breed was originally bred as a much larger sized dog, weighing almost 30 pounds, and it was used as a sled and sheep herding dog. In 1870, the breed became better known and the English Kennel Club recognized the so-called Spitz dog. After a visit to Florence, Italy, Queen Victoria returned to England with the Pomeranian after falling in love with the breed. The Pomeranian was then further developed and was bred down in size. The breed today is toy size and is a popular companion. The American Kennel Club officially recognized the breed in 1888. The Pomeranian is also known by the names of Pom, Zwergspitz, Dwarf Spitz and Loulou.
