History and Origins of the PointerThe History and Origins of the Pointer is really interesting. The history of the Pointer began in England in approximately 1650. The Pointer was originally bred to hunt game and eventually became an enthusiastic and successful gundog. This extremely hard working and energetic dog possesses great stamina and confidence which are important attributes to the dog's personality when considering its hunting role. Before the Pointer became a gundog, it was often used to find and point hares in conjunction with Greyhound coursing. The development of the Pointer is a little unclear, however, the breed undoubtedly descends from the Bloodhound, Greyhound and Foxhound and it is suggested that the Pointer was bred by crossing these breeds with a setting spaniel. The setting spaniel was used to develop the bird dogs of more recent times. The American Kennel Club formally recognized this breed in 1884. |
