History and Origins of the Pharaoh Hound

The History and Origins of the Pharaoh Hound is really interesting. The history of the Pharaoh Hound began in Ancient Egypt as long ago as 3000 B.C. This is amongst the oldest domesticated breeds of dog in recorded history. It is believed that the Phoenicians took the Pharaoh Hound to Malta where it settled here on this Mediterranean island and its sister island of Gozo. The Maltese people used this breed of dog for rabbit hunting as it is athletic, enthusiastic, strong, eager to please and hunts using both sight and sound. This breed became the national dog of Malta in 1974. The name Pharaoh derives from Egypt, however, the dog is also named Kelb Tal-Fenek which is Maltese for 'Dog of the Rabbit'. In 1977, this Hound was pictured on the Maltese Lira coins. During the history of this breed, it has also been used for protecting, guarding and as a gundog.

The dog's ears and nose turn a deep rose pink color! This breed is not the only that can blush, as the Ibizan Hound also shares this characteristic, however, it is a rarity! In the 1960s the breed arrived in both the United Kingdom and the United States of America. The American Kennel Club formally recognized the breed in 1983.
