The History and Origins of the Pekingese is really interesting. The history of the Pekingese began in the city of Peking, China. The breed was highly regarded and the Chinese believed that they could drive away evil spirits. The Pekingese was regarded as a legendary Foo Dog. Only Chinese Royalty were allowed to own a dog from this breed and anybody that attempted to steal one, was put to death! They were so highly regarded that non-royals had to bow to them. When an emperor passed away, his Pekingese would be sacrificed so that it could enter the afterlife alongside his master. Imperial guards were told to kill the Pekingese dogs when the British took over the Chinese Imperial Palace in 1860, this was to prevent the breed from entering foreign hands. However, five of the little dogs escaped death and were given to Queen Victoria and it was through these dogs that the Pekingese we recognize today, was developed.

As stated previously, this ancient breed was bred and originated in the city of Peking, China and it is the name of the city in which it originated that the name of this breed of puppy and dog derives from. This city is now known as Beijing. The breed is also sometimes known as Lion Dog or Pelchie Dog due to its similarities to Chinese guarding lions. This breed of dog was first shown in Great Britain in 1893, and the breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1909. It belongs to the Toy Group of Dogs. They typical personality and temperament of this breed is confident and bold, independent in thought, but very sweet and lovable by nature. The Pekingese makes a fantastic companion as it is very loving, affectionate and devoted to its master.
