History and Origins of the Parson Russell TerrierThe History and Origins of the Parson Russell Terrier is really interesting. The history of the Parson Russell Terrier began in the mid 1800s with the breed originating in the South of England. British breeders required a courageous dog that could assist on hunts and would be small enough and willing to dig its way through and hunt below ground for red fox. The dog had to be small enough to be carried by hunters in their bags whilst travelling by horseback. The breed was also created with legs long enough to enable it to keep up with the hounds when hunting within packs. The name of the breed derived from a clergyman named Rev. John Russell. Later, the Jack Russell show type became known in America as the Parson Russell Terrier, and the working type remained known as the Jack Russell Terrier. The two breeds are different in appearance with the Parson Russell Terrier being slightly bigger is size. The American Kennel Club officially recognized this breed in 1997. |
