History and Origins of the NewfoundlandThe History and Origins of the Newfoundland is really interesting. The history of the Newfoundland is believed to have began in Newfoundland, Canada, hence the name of the breed. However, some people believe that the breed descended from the French Hound known as the Great Pyrenees. The majority, however, agree that Newfoundland lies at the heart of the breed where it arrived accompanied by fishermen who had sailed from areas of Europe. The Newfoundland is a huge breed of dog with a faithful and steady temperament - a breed that is trustworthy and a true companion to man. This breed was used to help the fishermen retrieve their nets. It was skilled highly in this area as the dog is a fantastic swimmer, even being capable of swimming long distances. Also, this particular breed has a thick coat which protected it from icy waters. The American Kennel Club formally recognized the breed in 1886. The breed is sometimes known as Newf or Newfie. | |
