History and Origins of the MastiffThe History and Origins of the Mastiff is really interesting. The history of the Mastiff began many years ago. There are drawings of typical Mastiffs on Egyptian monuments dating back to around 3000 B.C. This massive breed of dog is also known as the Old English Mastiff, it was bred in Britain and used as a guard dog for more than 2000 years. The Mastiff fought alongside the British soldiers and became noticed by Julius Caesar in 55 B.C. He was so impressed by the utter power and fearlessness of the breed that he took some Mastiffs back to Rome with him where sadly he used them to fight against human gladiators and ferocious animals such as lions and bulls. This breed was popular back in England and peasants used them to guard their homes and protect against harmful predators such as wolves. It is thought that the Mastiff arrived in America on the Mayflower. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1885 and it is one of the biggest dogs recognized by the club, it is listed under the Working Group of Dogs. |
