History and Origins of the LowchenThe History and Origins of the Lowchen is really interesting. The history of the Lowchen began more than four hundred years ago somewhere in Europe. The exact country of origin is unknown, however, it is believed to be Germany. How the dog got its name is very interesting as the word Lowchen is in fact a German word and the names means 'Little Lion' which very much resembles the appearance of this particular breed. The Lowchen was bred as a companion and the ladies of the court groomed it like a little lion and often used the exposed skin of small dog as a foot warmer! This breed is fairly rare these days and in the 1960s it made the Guinness Book of World Records for being the rarest breed! The American Kennel Club formally recognized the breed in 1996. This little dog is fun-loving, spirited and has a positive temperament making it a lovely companion. It is suited to obedience and agility rings due to its agility and speed. | |
