The History and Origins of the Leonberger is really interesting. The history of the Leonberger began in the city of Leonberg which is located in Germany. The name of the breed derives from its city or origin. This giant breed was originally bred as a multi-purpose working dog to work as a draft dog, assisting with farm work as well as being a trustworthy and dependable companion. The breed was developed in 1846 by a German man called Heinrich who crossed the Newfoundland, Great Pyrenees and St Bernard. Eventually the breed became favored by German artists who used dogs from the breed as models. This particular dog has also appeared on European stamps. The popularity of the breed decreased after the First World War, however, fortunately two men saved the breed by recreating more from just a few of the remaining Leonbergers. This breed resembles a lion and is known as 'The Gentle Lion Dog' and 'Leo'. This breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2010.
