History and Origins of the Komondor

History and Origins of the Komondor

The History and Origins of the Komondor is really interesting. The history of the Komondor began when the Cumans took the breed with them from Asia when they moved westwards, arriving in Hungary in the 12th Century - the Cumans were granted asylum in Hungary in 1239. Evidence of Komondor remains were discovered in Cuman gravesites.  It's believed that the breed descended from Tibetian dogs. The Komondor was bred to live alongside livestock and protect it from some of the most ferocious animals such as wolves. The Komondor has a unique, white, long corded coat which resembles dreadlocks. It's the heaviest of all dog breed coats and the cords measure around 20-27cms in length. The coat protected the dog from animal attacks and bites. The coat also helped the dog to blend in amongst its livestock, making it almost camouflaged.

History and Origins - How the Komondor got its name

The history and origins of the Komondor continues with how the dog got his name! The name of the breed derives from Koman-dor which means 'dog of the Cumans'. This giant size breed is also known as the Hungarian Komondor, the Hungarian Sheepdog and the Mop Dog as it's long, heavily corded white coat resembles the head of a mop. This breed has been declared as a national treasure of Hungary which is to be preserved and protected from modification. In the early 1920s, the breed began to appear in other countries and was entered into dog shows. The Komondor is still used as a guard dog in today's time as it is naturally very protective, serious, dedicated and dominant. This breed should be owned by a very experienced and firm handler who will provide the dog with consistent obedience training from a young age. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1937.
