History and Origins of the Irish WolfhoundThe History and Origins of the Irish Wolfhound is really interesting. The history of the Irish Wolfhound isn't believed to have began in Ireland as the name of the breed suggests. There are Roman records of the Irish Wolfhound which date back to 391 A.D. However, this breed did become extremely popular in Ireland in later years and as the name of the breed implies, it was used to hunt wolves as well as oversized Irish elk. An old Irish proverb says that the Irish Wolfhound is 'Gentle when stroked, fierce when provoked'. This giant breed is the tallest dog in the world and can reach 7 feet in height when standing on its hind legs. The temperament of this breed tends to be very kind and sweet, however, history proves that it was once a fierce hunter who guarded his master's property and fought alongside them in battle, but also a breed that was a trustworthy and valuable companion. The Irish Wolfhound decreased in popularity at the end of the 18th century as the amount of wolves remaining in Ireland had significantly reduced. |
