History and Origins of the Ibizan HoundThe History and Origins of the Ibizan Hound is really interesting. The history of the Ibizan Hound isn't actually thought to have began on the Spanish island of Ibiza as the name of the breed perhaps leads you to believe. Instead, it is thought that sea-traders brought the dog to this Island, and other islands off the coast of Spain, where it became a very popular hunting dog; a sight hound tracking down rabbits in order to provide both itself and the people of the island of Ibiza with food. It is thought that there are depictions of a breed in ancient Egypt that are similar to the Ibizan Hound dating back to 3400 B.C. This breed shares similarities with the Pharaoh Hound and both of these hounds are blushing dogs (they actually blush when they become excited). This particular breed is a pleasant companion to man as it has a courteous, gentle and loyal temperament. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1978. Other names for the breed include Beezer, Podenco Ibicenco and the Ibizan Warren Hound. |
