History and Origins of the GreyhoundThe History and Origins of the Greyhound is really interesting. The history and the exact country of origin of the Greyhound remains unclear, however, we do know that the Greyhound is one of the most ancient breeds known to man. There are carvings on tombs in Egypt of this breed of dog which date back to 2900 B.C. The breed first appeared in America in the 1500s with Spanish explorers. This breed was one of the first to be recorded at dog shows in America. The Greyhound was quite the symbol of status in Great Britain many years ago and only royals bred them. This sight hound was used to hunt game, hare, fox, stag and deer using vision and speed. The Greyhound is the fastest breed of dog in the world and is widely used today in racing competitions where the Greyhounds chase after an artificial hare. This breed also makes a great companion to man. The American Kennel Club recognized this breed of puppy and dog in the year of 1885. |
