History and Origins of the Greater Swiss Mountain DogThe History and Origins of the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is really interesting. The history of the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog began in remote area of Switzerland when Swiss breeders decided that they required a large, sturdy, strong dog with an even-temperament that would eagerly and willingly carry out draft work, assisting cattle drivers, herding and guarding on farms in mountainous areas. The popularity of the breed decreased in the late 19th century as their main working roles were carried out by machinery and other breeds of dogs. However, the popularity of the breed once again saw an increase in the early 20th century. In today's times, this particular breed is still often used as a working dog as well as participating in obedience trials and being a fantastic companion to man. The American Kennel Club recognized the Greater Swiss Mountain breed in 1995. Other names for this breed include GSMD and the Swissy. | |
