History and Origins of the Great Dane

The History and Origins of the Great Dane is really interesting. The history of the Great Dane, as we recognize it today, began when German breeders decided that they requires a giant sized dog that was courageous enough to hunt boars. The German breeders are thought to have developed the Great Dane by crossing the Irish Wolfhound and the old English Mastiff. The boar is a very fierce animal so it took a very large, fearless and powerful dog to be capable of fronting it, hence the creation of the Great Dane. After this breed was no longer required for hunting boar, it became an estate guard dog and a companion to man. Historians believe that there are drawings which are very similar to the Great Dane on Egyptian monuments dating back to approximately 3000 B.C. Chinese literature from 1121 B.C. show the earliest written descriptions of a breed appearing to resemble the Great Dane.

History and Origins - How the Great Dane got its name
The history and origins of the Great Dane continues with how the dog got his name! Some sources believe that the breed originated in Denmark, not Germany. The name 'le Grand Danois' was given to the dog in 1749 by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon. The name translated to 'the Great Dane'. The Great Dane is known as the King of Dogs and the Gentle Giant. The breed has an elegant and dignified personality and temperament. It is very large in size with the average male measuring up to 36 inches in height at the shoulders. This is one of the tallest dog breeds in the world, the tallest so far measures 43 inches to the shoulder! It was no wonder that the breed was capable of hunting and confronting boars! However, it is also no surprise that the breed makes a superb guard dog as it is extremely loyal towards its owners and its size is simply enough to fend off anybody untoward. This breed makes a fantastic companion as it is easily trainable and holds a very gentle disposition. The American Kennel Club officially recognised the breed in the year of 1887 and it belongs to the Working Group of Dogs.
