History and Origins of the Giant SchnauzerThe History and Origins of the Giant Schnauzer is really interesting. The history of the Giant Schnauzer began in Germany, in the Wurttenberg and Bavaria sections. These particular areas were agricultural and breeders required a dog that could assist with farm work including guarding and helping shepherds with transporting livestock to market. The German breeders developed the Giant Schnauzer by crossing the Standard Schnauzer with the Bouvier des Flandres and the Black Great Dane. The name 'Schnaurzer' is taken from the German word 'Schnauze' which means 'muzzle'. This breed is also known by the name 'Riesenschnauzer' which means 'the giant'. This is an intelligent, highly protective, territorial, powerful, spirited and trainable breed of puppy and dog; these attributes became apparent during the First World War and the breed has since been used for police training. The American Kennel Club recognized this breed in 1930. | |
