History and Origins of the German Wirehaired PointerThe History and Origins of the German Wirehaired Pointer is really interesting. The history of the German Wirehaired Pointer began in Germany, when German breeders decided that they required a versatile hunting dog that would eagerly and enthusiastically point and retrieve both on land and in water. The German breeders crossed different mixtures of the German Shorthaired Pointer, Pudelpointer, Foxhound, Polish Water Dog and other Pointers. The Pudelpointer is a mixture of the Poodle and Pointer. Through crossing and careful development, the breeders created the German Wirehaired Pointer which is an energetic, bold, strong, versatile and eager breed of puppy and dog that is easily trainable and very loyal towards its owners. These attributes made this breed a great hunter. It's weather-proof coat enabled the dog to work through different terrains and to hunt through water. This breed is also referred to as the Deutscher, Drahthaariger, Vorstehhund, Drahthaar. It was recognised by the AKC in 1959. |
