History and Origins of the Flat Coated RetrieverThe History and Origins of the Flat Coated Retriever is really interesting. The history of the Flat Coated Retriever began in the 1800s. Believed to have originated from The United Kingdom, its ancestry includes the 'Retriever Proper' which is a development created through crossing the Large Newfoundland, setter, sheepdog, and other spaniel type water dogs. This breed pays outstanding loyalty and dedication to its owners. It is capable of forming very strong bonds and relationships with humans, and this coupled with their good humoured and cheerful personalities makes them exceedingly good companions. These qualities were appreciated by the fishermen of the time and the Retriever often travelled with them between Great Britain and North America. Being a hard worker and good swimmer, they were originally bred to flush and retrieve waterfowl and upland game. The retrievers were known as generic Labrador dogs until later on when they were recognised as a separate breed and given the name 'Flat Coated Retriever'. | |
