History and Origins of the English Setter

The History and Origins of the English Setter is really interesting. The history of the English Setter began over four hundred years ago in England, Great Britain. The original name given to the English Setter was 'Setting Spaniel', this breed is also sometimes referred to as a 'Laverack Setter'. Breeders required a gundog and this particular breed is one of the oldest of the gundog breeds. It is a gentle breed of puppy and dog that is very energetic, enthusiastic but gentle by personality and temperament. This meant that the English Setter would willing seek out birds then set beside it until the hunter came along to capture the bird. This crouch position is where the name 'Setter' derived. This breed is said to have developed from the Spaniel stock. The dog was later improved to make it stand out further once guns were introduced into hunting; the English Setter was given an upright pointing stance to make it more noticeable. This breed of puppy and dog was officially recognised by the American Kennel Club in 1884.
