The history of the Dandie Dinmont Terrier begins around the 1700s in Great Britain, between the border of Scotland and England. Throughout history, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier has been owned by different types of people, from gypsies to wealthy people. The dog was developed as breeders required a small dog that was courageous and dedicated enough to be able to efficiently hunt otter, badgers and vermin. The history and origin of how the Dandie Dinmont Terrier gained its name is really interesting. The name derived when the famous poet, Sir Walter Scott, wrote about a Dandie Dinmont Terrier in a poem entitled 'Guy Mannering' which was written in 1814. The farmer character in the poem was named Dandie Dinmont. This small breed of Terrier was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in the year of 1886. |
