History and Origins of the ChowThe History and Origins of the Chow is really interesting. The history of the Chow and its true origin is unclear. However, it is believed that this breed has been around for many, many years as pictures of it are evident on pottery and sculptures of the Chinese Han Dynasty dating as far back as 206 BC. It is uncertain which other breeds have had a influence over the development of the Chow Chow, however, some believe that the Chinese Shar Pei could be closely related as it shares some similarities such as the black pigments around the mouth. Other breeds that are thought to have played a part in the creativity of the Chow Chow are the Keeshond, Norwegian Elkhound, Samoyed and Pomeranian. The Chow Chow was bred for farm work and it carried out a number of duties including hunting and guarding. In this day and age, they are mainly used as companions. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed officially in 1903. | |
