History and Origins of the Chinese Shar PeiThe History and Origins of the Chinese Shar Pei is really interesting. The history of the Chinese Shar Pei began many years ago in China. The exact year is unknown, however, due to pictures of the breed evident on pottery, it is possible that the Chinese Shar Pei dates as far back as 206 BC. The name 'Shar Pei' is very relevant as it actually means 'sandy coat'. This breed was developed for farm work in China where it was given a number of different roles including guarding and hunting. Chinese history suggests that the people of China believed that the Shar Pei's black pigmented mouth and the dog's scowl would frighten evil spirits away. This breed has a wrinkled appearance and a head that resembles the same shape as a hippopotamus's head. It's a hardy, bold dog that holds a strong presence, therefore, rarely facing challenge. The Chinese Shar Pei was recognized officially by the American Kennel club in the year of 1992. |
