History and Origins of the Chesapeake Bay RetrieverThe History and Origins of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is really interesting. The history of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever started when a shipwreck occurred off the coast of Maryland, the United States of America, in the year of 1807. The ship had sailed from England and there were two Newfoundlands onboard. The American breeders developed the dog by crossing it with the English Otter Hound and other retrievers including the Flat and Curly coated. They wanted to create a breed that was dedicated, willing and strong enough to hunt waterfowl through treacherous weather conditions. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is known as the State Dog of Maryland and the toughest of water retrievers. This breed's careful development produced a dog that is a strong swimmer, an animal that has intelligence, stamina and courage, as well as a water-proof, resistant coat that allows the dog to withstand icy waters. |
