History and Origins of the Cairn TerrierThe History and Origins of the Cairn Terrier is really interesting. The history of the Cairn Terrier began in the beginning of the 1900s in the Highlands of Scotland and the Isle of Skye. Originally the Cairn Terrier was classed as part of the Skye Terrier class, as were the Scottish Highland and West Highland White Terriers. However, the breeds were separated and so the Cairn Terrier became its own individual breed. The breeders required a small dog that could fit down fox and badger dens (hence the word Cairn). The dog was bred to chase and hunt such animals, and to pin them down until the farmer reached them. In today's times, this breed of puppy and dog makes a good pet, however, due to their history and origin, they have a tendency to chase other animals and they have a naturally curious nature which can be a little mischievous. Therefore, suitable training must be given to any pup from this breed. | |
