History and Origins of the BriardThe History and Origins of the Briard is really interesting. The history of the Briard begins in France many, many years ago. It is thought that this dog was possibly bred as far back as the 8th century as it appears on tapestries from around this time. This French breed was originally bred to guard livestock and herd sheep. The Briard has exceptional hearing, independence, courage and intelligence. These are all attributes which make this breed of puppy and dog particularly good guardians and watchdogs. There is another French sheepdog which has a shorter coat, it is known as the Beauceron. Pierre Megnin differentiated between the two breeds. The American Kennel Club officially recognised the Briard in the year of 1928. This breed has been used to help with military work over the years. The French army have used the Briard to assist with search and rescue, and to help carry messages and supplies to soldiers. | |
