History and Origins of the BoxerThe History and Origins of the Boxer is really interesting. The history of the Boxer began in Germany back in the 19th century when breeders wanted a dog that could fight and hunt. They needed a dog with very good hearing that was strong and athletic. The Boxer would help hunt for game that was large in size such as the wild boar, and it would hold down its prey until the hunter arrived. The Boxer had strength and could fight also. It appeared like a boxer when it stood on its hind legs and looked like its boxing with its front paws - perhaps this is where the name of the breed derived. After the First World War, this breed entered the US and has become increasingly popular ever since. Puppies and dogs from the Boxer breed are very clever, sociable and caring. With the right training they make excellent family pets, and they are particularly fond of children. The Boxer breed was recognised by the AKC in 1904. | |
