The history of the Boerboel began in South Africa when a man named Jan Van Riebeeck introduced a big Mastiff breed called the Bullenbitjer when he travelled to the Cape. This was in the year of 1652 when Jan Van Riebeeck took the dog along to guard his family from this unfamiliar territory. The Boerboel was created by crossing the Bullenbitjer with some South African domestic breeds. This breed of dog was used to assist with farm work which including guarding, protecting and tracking. The breeders created a very intelligent and dignified dog that has great working abilities such as strength, courage, enthusiasm and protective instincts. In today's times, this breed is still used for its working abilities, but the Boerboel is also a very good companion and is a popular family pet throughout its country of origin.
