History and Origins of the Bernese Mountain DogThe History and Origins of the Bernese Mountain Dog is really interesting. The history of the Bernese Mountain Dog began in Switzerland. There are four types of Swiss Mountain Dog in total, and the Bernese is one of them. This breed is also known as the Berner Sennenhund. It was given its name for the Canton of Bern. This dog was bred for its ability to carry out drafting work in the Swiss mountains. It is a sturdy breed that has courage and strength making them suitable to this line of work. These dogs are also very adaptable to colder weather conditions, therefore, it was ideal for mountain work. This breed was also used on farms as guardians, and pulling heavy weights such as carts. The American Kennel Club recognised this breed of puppies and dogs in 1937, and it has been listed under the working group. This is an intelligent breed that has a lovely temperament making them great and ideal family pets in this day and age. |
