History and Origins of the Belgian SheepdogThe History and Origins of the Belgian Sheepdog is really interesting. The history of the Belgian Sheepdog began in the town of Groenendael in Belgium in the 1800s, and it was later officially recognised by the AKC, otherwise known as the American Kennel Club, in the year of 1912. These dogs were bred to herd sheep and guard livestock which are still duties that they continue to carry out in this day and age. They excel in their working abilities as they are intelligent, strong and athletic. During WW1, this breed played an important part as they were used to help out with carrying messages and supplies, as well as other very important roles. They are still very popular throughout their home country of Belgian, and they are often used as guard dogs, or to assist search and rescue teams. This is also a popular guide dog for the blind as it is extremely protective and smart. | |
