History and Origins of the Bedlington TerrierThe History and Origins of the Bedlington Terrier is really interesting. The history of the Bedlington Terrier began in England. These dogs were originally called the Rothbury Terrier, this is because it was bred in Northumberland, and Rothbury is a town that lies on the English border. During the early 19th century, the breed was re-named the Bedlington Terrier. The relevance to this name came from the Bedlington Mining Shire. It is not completely evident, or known, which breeds were used to create this dog, however, it is thought that the creation was influenced by the Dandie Dimont Terrier and the Otterhound. When this breed was first originated, dogs were used to race and the miners used it to help hunt vermin. The AKC (American Kennel Club) formaly recognised this breed in 1886. |
