History and Origins of the Basset Hound

The History and Origins of the Basset Hound is really interesting. The history of the Basset Hound began in France during the 19th Century when breeders decided that they wanted a dog with an enhanced sense of smell that could follow a trail of scent easily enabling it to hunt small game very efficiently either independently or as part of a pack. The popularity of the Basset Hound grew throughout the years, and in 1880, the Queen Alexandra brought these dogs and kept them in royal kennels. George Washington was also presented with Basset Hounds as a gift from Marquis de Lafayette. They were to be used to help during his hunting expeditions. This sweet natured dog, which is recognised by its short legs and heavy body, sad looking eyes and long ears, has since become very popular throughout family homes. It was officially recognised by the American Kennel Club in 1885.
