The name Bandog is shortened from Bandogge which originated in England during the time of the Saxons. The name derives from the word Banda which means chain. The dog was tied up during the day and let out during the night to protect and guard. This breed is not formally recognized or registered by the AKC American Kennel Club. The other names that are given to this breed include the American Bandogge, and the American Masti-Bull.
