History and Origins of the Alaskan MalamuteThe History and Origins of the Alaskan Malamute is really interesting. The history of the Alaskan Malamute began in America, in Alaska. This particular dog was bred for its athletic abilities. They required an active, powerful breed that had stamina, strength and endurance. They specifically required this dog for sledding and freighting purposes in the Arctic, it was important that it had the ability to travel long distances whilst carrying heavy and large loads. The Alaskan Malamute wasn't necessarily needed for sled racing, it was produced purposely for weight-pulling. The name Malamute derived from the native Innuit tribe in Alaska called Mahlemutes. It is closely related to the Siberian Husky, American Eskimo and the Samoyed, which are other Arctic breeds. This particular breed is the oldest and largest Arctic sled dog. The Alaskan Malamute was officially recognized by the AKC, American Kennel Club, in 1935. | |
