The Akita was originally bred as a working dog, hunting dog and fighting dog. In the early days, Akita's were a symbol of status and only Japanese Royalty were allowed to own a dog of this breed, however, over the years, the popularity of this particular breed decreased to almost extinction during World War II as people required the Akita for food and pelts. The popularity of this breed later increased again as it is thought that allied servicemen took a strong liking to this beautiful animal as they were attracted to its loyalty, bravery and power, and consequently started taking them back to their homelands including Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. This once again gave the Akita status throughout Japan.
